Social Networking and Community Building Assignment
Title: Journey Through Latin America
Grade Level/Subject: 5th grade social studies
Objective: Give students an interactive visualization of Latin America using social networking tools to connect them.
Description: Many students have heard of Latin America and seen pictures of many of the places there. Students will have to create a virtual tour of Latin America using photos and interactions with people. To foster more global understanding among my students, we are going to connect with classrooms in Latin America and create a tour with their help. Through this collaboration, students will gain a better understanding of what life is like on another continent.
Tools needed: A group Flickr Account, Padlet, Twitter, Skype or Google Hangout, and Weebly.
Project:
Step 1: Research
The first step is to get our project Twitter hashtag out to the world. We will be using the hashtag #latinamericaproject to connect with other schools. It’s my hope, that with the help of my PLN on Twitter and their followers, we can get this to other schools in Latin America. If those schools have the capablitiy, we will also have Skype or Google Hangouts (with all the schools in the project) to further discuss the topic and meet each other!

Once the hashtag is up and running, I will have a stream for the students to follow on school computers or at home. I will moderate it so that any negative tweets don’t accidentally get through.
While it would be ideal to have a chat night, my students are not old enough to have Twitter accounts (legally!).
If those schools have the capability, we will also have a Skype session or hold Google Hangouts (with all the schools in the project) to further discuss the topic and meet each other!
Using the text information from Twitter (and possibly picture/video) students will then go and find pictures representing the physical features and cultures of their Latin American country online and place them into their groups Flickr account to compile all those photos. In the group, they can comment on their reason behind choosing those pictures.

Once students have compiled over 100 photos, they will then begin brainstorming how to use their photos to give a virtual tour of Latin American country. Using their group page on Padlet, they can begin to brainstorm and outline their page by adding the photos they want to use and have open discussions or leave notes for other group members.
Step 3: Creating Website Page
Once the students have shown me their final draft of the project, they will be granted access to their website via their school email page and will post their creation for the world to see!
